Thanksgiving Tables & Community Treasures | October 10–12

Thanksgiving weekend has arrived in Yarmouth County with all the little things that make autumn here feel special: market baskets waiting to be filled, second-hand treasures with stories behind them, laughter on a local stage and a holiday meal overlooking Lobster Bay.

Saturday should be sunny but windy and cool, with a high near 11°C. Sunday will be milder at about 15°C, while Monday afternoon may bring rain. A warm layer will be useful for any time spent near the water.

Begin with a little treasure hunting

The Melbourne Community Centre is holding a yard sale on Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at 741 Melbourne Road in Arcadia.

Along with second-hand finds, visitors can enter a 50/50 draw and order the centre’s 2027 family calendars. The event listing does not mention a shopper admission charge, so what you spend will depend on what catches your eye.

Some of the nicest Saturday finds come with a story—and perhaps a familiar face on the other side of the table.

Gather something local for the table

The Yarmouth Farmers’ Community Market is open Saturday from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at 15 Hawthorne Street.

Inside, you will find a changing selection of seasonal vegetables, meat, seafood, baking, preserves, prepared dishes and locally handmade goods. Admission is free, with purchases priced by the individual vendors.

The market is indoors, accessible and parking-friendly, making it an easy choice if Saturday’s coastal wind feels colder than expected.

Plan your market visit

Thanksgiving feels a little warmer when something on the table was grown, baked or made close to home.

Spend Saturday evening laughing at Th’YARC

Is He Dead…Again? takes the stage at Th’YARC, 76 Parade Street, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

This locally produced farce combines mistaken identities with a murder mystery inside another murder mystery. Tickets are $20 or $18 for members, plus service fees. The production continues October 15–17 if your Thanksgiving plans are already full.

This is the weekend’s strongest weather-friendly evening option—and a lovely reminder of how much talent and creativity lives right here in Yarmouth County.

Gather beside Lobster Bay

The Argyler Lodge is serving its annual Thanksgiving buffet on Sunday, October 11, with seating available from 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

The menu includes herb-roasted turkey and gravy, molasses-glazed ham, traditional dressing, sweet-potato casserole, seasonal vegetables, homemade cranberry sauce and several autumn desserts.

Admission is $38 for adults, $17 for children 11 and under, and $12 for children six and under. Reservations are required by calling 902-643-2500 or emailing info@argyler.com.

A homemade Thanksgiving meal beside Lobster Bay feels like coastal comfort at its very best.

Whether your weekend includes an old treasure, something local for the table, an evening of laughter or a gathering beside the water, I hope there is a moment when everyone slows down and simply enjoys being together.

Sometimes home is not one particular place. It is the table we gather around, the familiar faces we meet along the way and the community waiting just beyond our own front door.

Until next time…
