Shorelines & Side Roads

Things to do around Yarmouth County | August 29–30

Late August has a way of reminding us to enjoy summer while it is still here. This weekend brings a lovely mix of community gatherings, local food, history and quiet places where you can simply slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Saturday is expected to be cloudy but comfortable at around 22°C, with Sunday bringing more sunshine and a similar high—good weather for following a few side roads and seeing where they lead.

Start Saturday at the Yarmouth Farmers’ Community Market

Ease into the weekend with locally grown food, seafood, baked treats, prepared dishes and handmade goods—all under one roof.

The market runs Saturday from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at 15 Hawthorne Street in Yarmouth. Admission is free, with purchases priced by each vendor.

Step inside Yarmouth County’s history

For an indoor outing, visit the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives at 22 Collins Street. Along with more than 20,000 artifacts documenting the area’s history, visitors can see the current Looking Back paintings exhibit.

Saturday is also one of the final opportunities of the season to inquire about touring the neighbouring Pelton-Fuller House. The museum is open from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Listed admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, $10 for families, and free for young children.

Mark the end of August with tea beside the lake

Sunday afternoon offers something wonderfully unexpected: Afternoon Tea at Birchdale Lake Retreat near Quinan.

From 2–4 p.m., guests can enjoy a high-tea-style selection in the main lodge, followed by time to walk, paddle, swim or simply relax on the deck. Tickets are $40 per person, and advance reservations are required through birchdalelake@gmail.com.

Follow the road to Port Maitland

With sunshine expected Sunday, pack a simple picnic and head to Port Maitland Beach Provincial Park at 3297 Main Shore Road.

The kilometre-long sand-and-cobble beach, grassy picnic area and nearby working wharf make this an easy place to spend an unhurried afternoon. Day use is free, and the park is open from 8 a.m.–11 p.m. Swimming is supervised during July and August, although visitors should confirm lifeguard coverage upon arrival.

Plan your Port Maitland visit

Whether your weekend includes a bustling community gathering, tea beside a quiet lake or a walk where the sand meets the Atlantic, there is something special waiting close to home. Sometimes all it takes to rediscover where we live is turning down a different side road.

Until next time…
